Fishing Line Explained: Mono, Braid and Fluorocarbon
Three materials, three jobs. Braid floats and barely stretches. Fluorocarbon sinks and is harder for a fish to see. Monofilament drifts, stretches, forgives mistakes and costs the least. Here is what the measured numbers say — including the two things the packaging tends to overstate.

If you are choosing your first line, the short answer is monofilament — and the rest of this page explains what the other two buy you, using measured properties rather than packaging claims.
The three lines, side by side

These are one manufacturer's published figures for its own materials, not an agency standard — brands and product lines differ. Use them as the shape of the difference, not as a specification.
Two things the packaging overstates
Worth getting straight before you spend money.
Fluorocarbon is not invisible. The claim rests on refractive index: the closer a material is to water's 1.33, the less it bends light and the less a fish sees it. Fluorocarbon at 1.42 genuinely is closer than nylon at 1.58. But 1.42 is not 1.33. It is harder to see, not gone — and anyone telling you a fish cannot see your line is selling something.
Fluorocarbon is not the low-stretch line. This one is nearly universal and the numbers do not support it: nylon 25–35%, fluorocarbon 23–30%. Those ranges overlap. The material that actually removes stretch is braid, at 5% or less — a difference of a whole order of magnitude, not a few percent.
So if what you want is to feel a soft bite in deep water and drive a hook home at distance, that comes from braid. Choosing fluorocarbon for "sensitivity" is choosing the wrong tool for the reason people usually give.
What each one is actually for
Monofilament — the beginner's line, and not only the beginner's
Nylon, extruded as a single strand. It sits near neutral in the water, stretches a lot, ties easily, and is the cheapest of the three.
That stretch gets described as a weakness. For someone learning, it is the single most useful property on this page: it absorbs a hook set that was too violent, a drag screwed down too tight, and a fish that lunges at the net. Those are the three ways beginners lose fish, and mono forgives all of them.
It also stays useful for experienced anglers wherever a cushion helps — treble-hooked crankbaits, for instance, where a stretchless line tears hooks out of a thrashing fish.
Downsides: it takes on memory, it weakens with UV exposure over a season, and it is thicker than braid for the same strength.
Braid — thin, direct, and visible
Woven PE fibre. Almost no stretch, so everything the lure does arrives at your hand. Very thin for its strength, so you fit far more on a spool and cast further.
The trade-offs are real and specific:
- It floats — helpful for topwater, unhelpful when you want to get down.
- It is the most visible at 1.54 refractive index, close to nylon.
- It has the weakest abrasion resistance. Against oyster, rock, or a bridge piling, braid is the line that parts.
- It needs different knots. Braid is slick and a knot that holds in mono can slip in braid. Our knots page covers which is which — the FG knot exists specifically to join braid to a leader.
Which is why braid is very often run with a leader rather than alone.
Fluorocarbon — the business end
Denser than water, so it sinks and takes your lure down with it. Closer to water optically than nylon. Best abrasion resistance of the three.
Those three properties describe a leader more than a main line, and that is how most people use it: braid for the reel, a rod's length of fluorocarbon at the end. You get thin, direct, long-casting main line plus a tip section that resists teeth and rock and is harder to see.
It is also the most expensive and the stiffest to knot, which is another argument for using a short piece rather than 200 yards.
What "pound test" really means — and does not
Pound test is the line's intended breaking strength under steady pull. A 10 lb test line is built to break at around 10 pounds of load.
It is not the size of fish you can land. People land fish many times heavier than their line rating routinely, because:
- The drag gives line rather than letting load build to breaking point
- The rod bends, absorbing surges
- The angle and the water take load off
- A fish is not a dead weight on the end of a rope
The thing that genuinely lowers your breaking strength is your knot. Every knot is weaker than the line it is tied in — that is unavoidable — so a poorly tied one is the real weak point far more often than the line rating is. Wet your knots before pulling them tight.
Leaders, briefly
A leader is a short length of different line between your main line and the hook. Two reasons to use one:
- Abrasion — teeth, rock, oyster, pilings, sand. A leader is a sacrificial section.
- Visibility — a less visible material where it counts, which is right next to the bait.
A fly line setup adds backing: cheap thin line under the fly line, filling the spool and giving you reserve if a fish runs further than your fly line is long.
Line memory, and the problem people blame on their reel
Memory is the line holding the coil shape of the spool. High-memory line comes off in springs, tangles, casts badly and forms wind knots.
Mono and fluorocarbon both take a set over time, and heat and sunlight accelerate it. Braid has essentially none.
A great deal of what gets blamed on a cheap reel is old line with memory. Respooling costs a few dollars and fixes more casting problems than any upgrade.
So what should you put on?
- First reel, general freshwater: monofilament, 8–12 lb test. Forgiving, cheap, easy to knot.
- Bass in cover, or anywhere you need to feel bottom: braid main line, fluorocarbon leader.
- Crankbaits and treble hooks: monofilament, for the cushion.
- Clear water, spooky fish, short range: fluorocarbon leader at minimum.
- Anywhere near oyster, rock or teeth: a leader, always.
And whatever you choose — replace it more often than you think. Line is the cheapest part of the setup and the only part connecting you to the fish.

- Is fluorocarbon really invisible underwater?
- No, and that is worth being clear about. Visibility depends on how close a material's refractive index is to water's, which is 1.33. Fluorocarbon is about 1.42, nylon about 1.58. So fluorocarbon is genuinely less visible than nylon — but 1.42 is not 1.33, and it does not disappear. Treat it as harder to see, not invisible.
- Does fluorocarbon have less stretch than monofilament?
- Much less than the marketing implies. One manufacturer's published figures put nylon at 25 to 35 percent elongation and fluorocarbon at 23 to 30 percent — overlapping ranges and a modest difference. The line that genuinely has almost no stretch is braid, at 5 percent or less. If you want direct contact with the lure, that comes from braid, not from fluorocarbon.
- What does pound test mean?
- It is a rating of the line's breaking strength — a 10 pound test line is intended to break at around 10 pounds of steady pull. It is not the size of fish you can catch. Your drag, the rod, the knot and the angle all take load off the line, which is why people land fish far heavier than their line rating. Note also that a knot is always weaker than the line itself, so a badly tied knot lowers your real breaking strength.
