Almost everything predatory eats injured baitfish, and almost no presentation imitates one better than a weightless soft jerkbait. Rigged on an EWG worm hook with the point buried, it is effectively weedless, it casts well enough on light braid, and it falls slowly with a shimmy that is very hard for a following fish to ignore.

Why the Soft Plastic Jerkbait (Fluke Style) stands out

Twitch, pause, and let it fall

The action is entirely angler-generated. Two or three sharp twitches send it darting side to side, then the pause lets it glide down. Almost every bite comes on the pause, which is the hardest thing to make yourself do.

Weightless and weedless together

Rigged Texas-style on a wide gap hook with the point tucked into the plastic, it comes through grass, laydowns and dock pilings that would stop a treble-hooked lure, while still falling naturally.

Works in both fresh and salt

Bass along a weed edge and speckled trout over a grass flat are the same presentation with a different colour. It is one of the few lure styles that genuinely crosses over.

The verdict

One pack, one hook size, and a lot of fish. The only real technique is to make yourself pause longer than feels right.
