Fishing Reels Explained: Spinning vs Baitcaster

Start with a spinning reel. Then the two numbers on the box that actually matter: gear ratio, which is not the same as retrieve speed, and drag — where the published guidance sets braid lighter than mono, for a reason that comes straight from how much each line stretches.

Start with a spinning reel. That is the honest answer for anyone buying a first setup, and the rest of this page explains what the other types are for and what the numbers on the box actually mean.

The two that matter are gear ratio and drag — and drag is the one that loses fish.

Why spinning is the right first reel

On a spinning reel the spool never rotates during the cast. Line simply peels off the front of a fixed spool, pulled by the weight of the lure. Nothing is spinning that can outrun your lure, so the backlash failure mode does not exist.

It also handles light lures well, which matters because beginners generally fish light lures.

The bail arm is the wire loop that flips over to lay line back onto the spool. Open it to cast, close it to retrieve. It is the part that breaks, and on cheap reels it is the part that closes by itself mid-cast.

What a baitcaster buys you, and costs you

On a baitcaster the spool spins as line leaves it. That gives more control, more accuracy and more power for heavy lures — you can pitch a bait under a dock with a thumb on the spool in a way a spinning reel cannot match.

The cost is that the spool has momentum. When your lure slows down and the spool does not, line keeps coming off with nowhere to go: a backlash, or bird's nest. Modern brakes reduce it. Practice removes it. Neither happens on day one.

Buy one when you know why you want it.

Gear ratio: what it does and does not tell you

Gear ratio is how many times the spool or rotor turns for one turn of the handle. A 6.2:1 reel turns 6.2 times per crank.

The trade-off is the same as gears on a bicycle:

  • Lower ratio (around 5:1) — more cranking power. For deep-diving crankbaits and anything that pulls hard.
  • Higher ratio (7:1 and up) — picks up line faster. For quickly recovering slack, or working fast baits.

But gear ratio is not retrieve speed. Line recovered per handle turn depends on gear ratio and how big the spool is, because a larger spool moves more line per rotation. Two reels both marked 6.2:1 will retrieve different amounts if their spools differ.

The figure that settles it is inches per turn (IPT), which many manufacturers publish. If you care about actual speed, compare IPT rather than ratio.

Drag — the part that actually loses fish

The drag is a stack of washers that lets line slip under load rather than break. Set it too tight and something gives: the line, the knot, or the hook hole in the fish's mouth. Set it too loose and you cannot drive a hook home.

Almost every beginner sets it too tight.

The published numbers

Salt Water Sportsman publishes guidance as a percentage of your line's breaking strength:

So on 10 lb mono you are looking for roughly 2 lb of drag. That is far less than most people expect, and it is the correct amount.

Why braid is set lighter — and it is not arbitrary

Look at the two columns again: braid is set lower than mono at every line class. The reason is stretch.

The drag standards were developed around monofilament, which "stretches as much as 25 percent," and that stretch "cushions against the sudden spikes in drag tension" when a fish surges. Braid has essentially none — around 5 percent or less, as covered on our fishing line page.

Take the cushion away and every lunge arrives at full force. So the drag has to be lighter to do the cushioning the line no longer does.

This is a genuinely useful thing to understand rather than memorise: when you switch a reel from mono to braid, your old drag setting is now too tight.

How to actually measure it

You need a scale — a fish-weighing scale is fine — and ideally a second person:

  1. Thread the line and attach it to the scale.
  2. Point the rod straight down the line, with no bend in it. A bent rod is absorbing load and will give you a false reading.
  3. Have your helper pull the scale back slowly and steadily.
  4. Note the reading at the moment line begins to slip.
  5. Adjust and repeat until it matches the percentage above.

Do it once, at home, and you will know what that setting feels like by hand forever after.

These are guidelines rather than laws — the right setting shifts with the situation, and fishing tight to structure sometimes justifies more. But start from the number.

Spool, bearings, and the specs worth ignoring

The spool holds the line. On a spinning reel a spare spool is a cheap way to carry a second line type.

Ball bearings are the specification most inflated on packaging. More is not better: ten cheap bearings run worse than four good ones, and where they sit matters more than the count. Judge a reel by how it feels turning under load and how smoothly the drag starts up — a drag that needs a hard tug before it moves is a drag that will break your line on the first run.

Reel size is the number worth attending to. A 2500–3000 size spinning reel covers most freshwater; larger numbers mean more line and more drag for bigger fish and saltwater.

Care, in one paragraph

Rinse a reel with fresh water after saltwater — gently, never blasted with a hose, which drives salt into the bearings. Back the drag off when you store it so the washers are not compressed for months. And respool regularly; as the line page notes, a great deal of what gets blamed on a reel is old line.

Braid has almost none — around 5 percent or less — so nothing absorbs those spikes except the rod and the drag itself. Hence the lower percentages.
What is a spincast reel?
The closed-face reel with a push button, usually the first reel a child is given. The line comes off a covered spool through a hole in a nose cone, and the button releases it. It is nearly impossible to tangle, which is the point, but it holds little line, has weak drag and limited casting distance. Fine for a first afternoon, quickly outgrown.
Do more ball bearings make a better reel?
Not reliably. Bearing count is one of the easiest numbers for a manufacturer to inflate, and ten cheap bearings run worse than four good ones. Where they sit matters more than how many there are. Judge a reel on how smoothly it turns under load and how its drag behaves, not on the number printed on the box.
