How to Catch Salmon in Lake Michigan
Chinook are in catchable numbers by mid-August, and Michigan DNR does not take their eggs until the first two weeks of October. That seven-week gap between the run and the spawn is the thing most guides collapse into one date, and it is why anglers turn up weeks late.

Chinook are in catchable numbers by mid-August. Michigan DNR does not take their eggs until the first two weeks of October. That gap — roughly seven weeks — is the single most useful thing to know about this fishery, and most guides collapse it into one date.
The run is not the spawn
Anglers ask when salmon spawn in Lake Michigan and get told "autumn", which is true and useless. Two different events are being run together.
The run is fish leaving the lake, staging off river mouths, and pushing into tributaries. Michigan DNR reports chinook moving upstream in late summer and present in catchable numbers by mid-August.
The spawn is eggs going into gravel, and it is weeks later. The best public marker for it is the DNR's own egg-take schedule, because an egg take only happens when the fish are genuinely ripe:
| Event | Timing |
|---|---|
| Chinook catchable in numbers | Mid-August |
| DNR egg-take operations run | Mid-September – late October |
| Chinook egg take, Little Manistee River Weir | First week of October |
| Coho egg take, Platte River hatchery | Third week of October |
Source: Michigan DNR, checked 29 August 2026.
Read that as a readiness marker, not a calendar. It means DNR finds ripe chinook on the Little Manistee in early October — an excellent guide to peak spawning in that system, and a poor guide to a precise date on any other river.
The practical consequence: if you wait for "the spawn" you have missed six weeks of the best fishing. Staging fish in late August and September are fresh, aggressive and far better sport than fish that have been in the river a month.
Fishing from shore and the piers
Autumn is when this becomes a realistic shore fishery, because the fish come to you. Salmon stage off river mouths and along the piers before running, which is the only time of year they are reliably within casting range.
Where: pier heads and the channels beside them, river mouths, and the beaches immediately either side.
When: first light, last light, and after dark. Low light is not a preference here, it is most of the pattern.
What: glow spoons are the reported standard, with spinners and skein fished under a float also widely used. Our saltwater lure guide covers metal jigs and spoons that fish the same way.
Which species: coho in October are smaller, more numerous and considerably more forgiving than chinook. If you are taking someone new, or children, target the coho run rather than the kings.
Water temperature does the steering
Salmon are following cold water and bait, and both move. This is a fishery where a temperature reading beats a calendar — a warm autumn holds fish out longer, a cold snap pushes them in.
Our live water temperature tool pulls current USGS gauge readings by state, including Michigan and Wisconsin rivers, which is a better signal for whether fish are moving than any published date.
Four states, four rulebooks
Lake Michigan is bordered by Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana and Illinois, and each licenses and regulates separately — different seasons, different limits, different licences.
There is no single Lake Michigan regulation. Check the agency for the state whose water you are actually standing in, before you go.
Handling
Salmon are large and are usually being kept. If you are releasing, keep the fish in the water and support it horizontally. If you are keeping it, bleed and ice it immediately — see how to fillet a fish, where the first ten minutes matter more than the knife work.
Fish late in the run, close to spawning, deteriorate quickly and are poor eating. That is another practical argument for fishing the staging period rather than waiting.

Frequently asked questions
- When do salmon run in Lake Michigan?
- Chinook begin moving upstream in late summer and are in catchable numbers by mid-August, according to Michigan DNR. Coho follow, running later. The run and the spawn are separate events though — DNR takes chinook eggs in the first two weeks of October and coho eggs in the third week, which is when those fish are actually ripe.
- Can you catch Lake Michigan salmon from shore?
- Yes, and autumn is when it becomes realistic. Fish stage off river mouths and around piers before running, which puts them within casting range. Glow spoons, spinners and skein under a float are the standard approaches, fished at dawn, dusk or after dark.
- What is the difference between the salmon run and the spawn?
- The run is fish moving from the lake toward and into the rivers. The spawn is the eggs actually going into the gravel, and it happens weeks later. In Lake Michigan chinook are catchable from mid-August while DNR does not take their eggs until early October — roughly a seven-week gap. Advice that treats them as one event sends you at the wrong time.
- Is it better to fish for chinook or coho?
- Chinook are larger and run earlier. Coho run later, are smaller and more numerous, and are generally the more forgiving fishery — a better choice for a beginner or for taking children. DNR takes coho eggs in the third week of October, two to three weeks behind the chinook.
- Do you need a licence for Lake Michigan salmon?
- Yes, and which one depends on where you stand. Four states border Lake Michigan — Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana and Illinois — and each licenses and regulates separately, with its own seasons and limits. Check the agency for the state whose water you are fishing.
