When Do Walleye Spawn in Michigan?

Michigan walleye spawn from late March into April, peaking at 42–50°F. But the state has two of North America's biggest runs, and they don't peak at the same time.

Michigan walleye spawn from late March into April, peaking when water reaches 42–50°F. The migration begins earlier and colder, at 38–44°F, so fish are moving well before they are spawning.

What makes Michigan different is that it holds two of the largest walleye runs in North America, and they do not peak at the same time.

The Tittabawassee takes a good portion of the roughly one million walleye that live in Saginaw Bay. The largest fish stage under the ice through late winter, and push upstream as soon as it breaks open — which is why the run is early and why it moves with ice-out rather than with the calendar.

The Detroit River is fed by Lake Erie's enormous population. Trophy fishing there can peak as late as the first week of April, when the river finally reaches about 40°F and fish begin actively spawning, with peak spawning between 44 and 48°F. Michigan DNR has estimated that arriving around 15 April.

Both are worth knowing about even if you fish neither, because they set the pattern: ice-out and water temperature, not a date, determine when your water goes.

Two temperatures, and why the gap is useful

A river holding walleye at 40°F is holding staging fish. They have arrived and they are not yet spawning, and that pre-spawn window is the one most worth fishing — the fish are concentrated, they are feeding, and they are not yet locked onto gravel.

Males first, then the big females

Males move into the spawning areas in early spring when the water may be only a few degrees above freezing. The larger females arrive later.

This is the single most useful thing to know about a Michigan spring run, because it explains the complaint you hear every year: the early run is nothing but small fish. That is not a bad year and it is not bad fishing. The females have not turned up yet.

A five-pound female carries more than 100,000 eggs and can carry as many as 600,000. Those are the fish that arrive as water climbs through the mid-40s.

Where they spawn — and why current does the work

Walleye spawn over rock, rubble and gravel, in rivers or on windswept shallows, in one to six feet of water.

The reason the water has to be moving is that the fish do nothing for their eggs. Walleye are not territorial at spawning time: they broadcast their eggs and exercise no parental care at all. No nest, no guarding.

So current or wave action has to clear the fine sediment and keep the eggs aerated. The same gravel is prime in a river run or on a wind-blown point, and worthless in a silted calm bay.

Where to look in Michigan:

  • River runs below the first barrier — dams and rapids stack fish hard.
  • Windswept rock and rubble shorelines in 1–6 feet.
  • Reef tops and rocky bars exposed to prevailing wind. Saginaw Bay's historic rock reefs are exactly this kind of structure.
  • River mouths on the Great Lakes and larger inland lakes.

Seasons

Michigan's walleye seasons are set by zone and by water, and several are deliberately timed around the spawn — the Saginaw River, for example, reopens on the last Saturday in April, after spawning. Great Lakes, connecting waters and inland waters all differ.

Fishing the phases

Pre-spawn staging (38–44°F). The best of it. Fish are concentrated below barriers and near spawning structure and they are feeding. Jig and minnow worked slowly, or a lightly weighted live-bait rig. Nothing chases in water this cold.

Peak spawn (42–50°F). Fish are on the rocks, largely after dark. Numbers are high, average size is skewed small by all the males.

Post-spawn. Spent females are lethargic for a week or two, then feed hard. They pull back to the first break off the spawning structure — and this is when the year's biggest fish become catchable again.

Handle big spring females carefully. A large March or April walleye is a female carrying or recovering from an enormous egg load, and she took many years to get there. Horizontal support, seconds out of the water, straight back.
